Albert Wallis:

I am a 35 year old blacksmith and metalworker, based in Bath and I have practiced martial arts, in some form or other, for most of my life.

At the age of 18 I began practicing Shaolin Kung Fu under Shifu Neil Genge (Shi De Yan), of Bristol Shaolin Wushu Academy and this martial art has been my primary focus ever since.  Under Neil’s tutelage I learned many of the open hand and weapon forms that have made Shaolin Kung Fu famous around the world. He is also responsible for introducing me to what has become my real passion; the older traditional hand forms of Shaolin boxing. Some of these include Xiao Hong Quan, Da Hong Quan, Tong Bei Quan and Taizu Quan, to name a few.

In 2014 I was able to accompany Neil to China and train in the Shaolin Temple. He has been travelling there every year since the late 1980s and continues to do so to this day. I have been back to China several times since then and in early 2017 began training under Master Hu Zhengsheng. He is known for teaching Shaolin Kung Fu with exceptional focus on maintaining the traditional theory and methods behind every movement of each drill and form. I was immediately attracted to this style because of the particular focus on body mechanics, breathing and the use of ‘intent’.

I am proud to continue being a student of both teachers, training with Shifu Neil Genge when in England and Master Hu Zhengsheng when in China. To find out more about my teachers, please click on their names, or click on links in the menu above.
